On this day in 1703 in England, this poem by “Robinson Crusoe” author Daniel Defoe is what it took to be put in the pillory for seditious libel:

But Englishmen do all Restraint despise,
Slaves to the Liquor, Drudges to the Pots,
The Mob are Statesmen, and their Statesmen Sots.
